1.4.5.2 - Center Punch

Objective: Learn how to create a physical “dimple” in metal to prevent your drill bit from wandering off your layout line.

🔍 Why use a Center Punch? As shown in the video, drill bits are designed to cut, but their tips can often “skate” or “wander” across smooth metal like our 1x2 aluminum tubes.

  1. The Problem: Without a punch, your hole might end up 1/16” or 1/8” away from your intended mark, ruining your alignment with the 3D printed Jig.
  2. The Solution: The automatic center punch uses an internal spring mechanism to strike a hardened point into the metal. This creates a small crater that “traps” the tip of the drill bit, forcing it to stay perfectly on target.
