1.4.5.2 - Center Punch
Section titled “1.4.5.2 - Center Punch”Objective: Learn how to create a physical “dimple” in metal to prevent your drill bit from wandering off your layout line.
🔍 Why use a Center Punch? As shown in the video, drill bits are designed to cut, but their tips can often “skate” or “wander” across smooth metal like our 1x2 aluminum tubes.
- The Problem: Without a punch, your hole might end up 1/16” or 1/8” away from your intended mark, ruining your alignment with the 3D printed Jig.
- The Solution: The automatic center punch uses an internal spring mechanism to strike a hardened point into the metal. This creates a small crater that “traps” the tip of the drill bit, forcing it to stay perfectly on target.
